Traditional fingerprint readers and retina scanners may become a thing of the past. The Israeli company ID-U Biometrics has developed a fundamentally new approach to personal identification. They have introduced a new biometric system capable of recognizing individuals by unique eye movements, and it can even be implemented in mobile phones.
Replacing bulky and expensive retina scanners will be a simpler and more affordable system.
ID-U Biometrics’ technology allows for identification with up to 97% accuracy – a very high rate among identification systems. Developers claim that their software captures around ten different features 30 times per second, requiring only a display and a video camera for the system itself.
The new technology identifies individuals by studying the unique characteristics of eye movements. Developers note that these «kinetic traits» are independent of the trajectory of the mark on the display. Based on these biometric measurements, an identification key can be created for each specific individual. The manufacturer has even come up with a name for it – 4D-BiometricsTM.
«Different people’s eye movements can be compared to different individuals navigating the same race track: the route is the same, but the trajectories are different,» explained Daphna Palti, Executive Director of ID-U Biometrics, to Tech Review.
According to her, the new technology is cheaper and easier to implement than current advanced biometric systems. Therefore, 4D-BiometricsTM can work with most models of mobile phones or computers equipped with cameras.
